What Is Process Simulation?

Process simulation is the use of software models to represent mass and energy balances, equipment performance, and control logic for a chemical or energy process. Engineers run scenarios to predict yields, utilities, emissions, and bottlenecks before committing to capital or operational changes.

What a simulator does

Tools such as Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS solve interconnected unit models (distillation, reactors, heat exchangers, compressors) using thermodynamic property methods and specified boundary conditions.

Typical project inputs

  • Process flow diagrams and operating data (when available)
  • Component list and property method selection
  • Design or operating targets (throughput, purity, energy)

Steady-state vs dynamic simulation

Steady-state models (typical Aspen Plus / HYSYS) assume constant flows and inventories—best for design sizing, heat and material balance checks, optimization, and debottlenecking at a fixed operating point. Most consulting projects start here.

Dynamic simulation models time-varying behavior—startup, shutdown, control response, and transient upsets. Use it when timing matters (relief, control strategy, operator training). Scope and data needs are higher; we can advise if it is justified for your objective.
